ShibTheMetaverse.io, the domain that hosted Shiba Inu’s virtual-world project, has lapsed and is no longer controlled by the SHIB development team, according to community figure Mazrael. In a post on X on July 7, Mazrael flagged the expiry as a security issue, warning that the address can now be re-registered by any third party and should not be treated as an official SHIB property going forward.

The distinction matters for on-chain researchers and holders alike: an expired domain that once carried brand equity is a textbook vector for phishing kits, fake wallet-connect prompts and spoofed token approvals. Anyone landing on ShibTheMetaverse.io after the lapse has no guarantee the content, wallet-connection flow or contract addresses served there originate from the Shib ecosystem.

Consolidation to Shib.io

Mazrael said the underlying cause is structural rather than a lapse in operational security: the Shiba Inu ecosystem is moving away from maintaining standalone domains for individual products. Shib.io is being positioned as the single canonical gateway for all ecosystem services, including the eventual return of Shib: The Metaverse once the migration is finished.

Mazrael pointed to commits made to the project’s Git repository roughly a week before the warning as evidence that metaverse development has not stalled, even though public-facing updates have been sparse. He added that Shib.io itself is scheduled for interface improvements as the restructuring progresses, with the domain expected to become the primary access point for all Shiba Inu products once the transition is complete.

No timeline was given for when Shib: The Metaverse will resurface under the unified domain, and thecryptobasic.com’s report does not specify a completion date for the Shib.io migration.
