Kraken’s tiered API rebates aim at flow that never touches a UI: bots, algos and institutional desks
Kraken's new API Partner Program scales rebates with volume routed through code, not clicks — a bid to lock in sticky institutional order flow.

Kraken has launched an API Partner Program where rebates scale directly with volume routed through its API infrastructure — the higher the tier of flow sent via API, the larger the payout. This is a structural mechanism, distinct from standard listing fees or marketing partnerships.
Flow that never touches a browser
The program is engineered around order flow generated entirely through code: trading platforms, algorithmic desks and institutional liquidity providers connecting via API to place orders, monitor spreads and manage execution across venues. Industry-wide, this segment makes up the bulk of high-frequency and institutional trading volume.
By tying rebates specifically to API-routed activity, Kraken is competing on execution mechanics — routing, speed, fee tiers — rather than on retail-facing app features or interface polish.
The liquidity feedback loop
The incentive structure runs on standard order-book logic: deeper books attract more traders, and more trading volume deepens the books further. Locking in API relationships with market makers and systematic firms is one way to sustain that loop, since these participants tend to provide continuous two-sided liquidity rather than episodic volume.
Formalized volume-based rebates also raise the switching cost for any bot or platform already integrated with Kraken’s API. If the rebate math works out, third-party tools generating flow have a concrete financial reason to stay connected rather than reroute to a competing venue.
What actually determines algo allocation
Whether the rebates actually redirect order flow depends on the same variables algo desks always weigh: uptime, spread quality, asset coverage, compliance standards, and how Kraken’s rebate economics compare against rival API programs. Institutional flow is driven by price and reliability, not brand loyalty, and Kraken is far from the only venue targeting this segment.
If bots, portfolio managers and analytics tools build execution logic directly on Kraken’s API, the exchange becomes embedded in daily trading workflows rather than staying one option among many — a form of integration that’s considerably harder to unwind than any promotional push. Rebuilding execution infrastructure around a competing venue carries real friction and cost for algo operators.
The move reads as a competitive play specific to Kraken’s own business rather than evidence of a broader exchange-wide shift. It does confirm where venue competition is increasingly being fought: API connectivity and institutional plumbing, not token listings or headline fee cuts.
