GWEI Open Interest Doubles to $14.85M as Longs Hold 57% Edge Post-Coinbase Slump

ETHGas (GWEI) has clawed back roughly 38% in the past 24 hours, trading near $0.0275 after a two-week slide that took the token as low as $0.019 — well beneath its $0.039 Coinbase listing price. Derivatives data suggest the bounce is being driven by fresh leveraged positioning rather than short covering alone.

Open interest doubles as leverage returns

GWEI’s futures open interest nearly doubled to $14.85 million, according to CoinGlass data cited by AMBCrypto’s derivatives desk. A rise in open interest alongside a price recovery typically signals new capital entering the market rather than existing holders simply unwinding shorts.

Positioning has tilted bullish in the process. Coinalyze’s 1-day long/short ratio shows longs controlling about 57% of total open interest — not an extreme skew, but enough to indicate improving sentiment following the post-listing drawdown.

That said, a 57/43 split leaves the trade exposed. Crowded long books built on thin liquidity tend to unwind quickly if price stalls, and a token trading three cents off its exchange debut still carries elevated liquidation risk on either side of the book.

Chart structure points to $0.064 resistance

On the daily chart, GWEI found a floor near $0.0191 before reclaiming a large portion of its losses. The Stochastic RSI bottomed near 18.56 — an oversold reading — before turning higher, a pattern that has historically preceded a shift from selling pressure back to buyer control.

If the reversal extends, traders are watching $0.064 as the next resistance level, more than double the current price. Reclaiming that zone would put GWEI well above its Coinbase listing print and effectively erase the entire post-debut drawdown.

What the data implies for positioning

The combination of rising open interest, a long-skewed book and an oversold-to-recovering momentum reading is a constructive but fragile setup. New listings frequently see this kind of volatility as early liquidity providers exit and derivatives traders test both sides of the range.

For traders tracking GWEI, the key signal to watch is whether open interest continues climbing alongside price on any approach to $0.064. A stall in open interest growth near resistance, paired with a still-crowded long side, would be the classic setup for a sharp long-squeeze reversal back toward the $0.019–$0.0275 range.
