Coinbase Routes Users to On-Chain DEX With New Base, Solana ‘Launches’ Tab
Coinbase adds a Launches tab funneling users into its built-in DEX for new Base and Solana tokens, requiring self-custody and geo-gated access.

Coinbase has added a new “Launches” tab to its app, a feature that funnels users directly into its built-in decentralized exchange to trade newly issued tokens on Base and Solana. The rollout marks another step in Coinbase’s push to blend centralized-exchange distribution with on-chain execution, positioning the platform closer to the frontlines of retail token discovery.
What the feature actually does
According to Coinbase’s own product page, cited by The Defiant, the Launches tab is not available in all locations and requires users to connect a self-custody wallet to participate. That structure means the feature operates outside Coinbase’s custodial order book entirely — trades execute on-chain, through Coinbase’s integrated DEX interface, rather than against the exchange’s centralized liquidity.
By surfacing Base and Solana token launches inside the main Coinbase app, the company is effectively competing with the swarm of standalone launchpad and aggregator interfaces that traders currently use to catch new listings early — apps that have proliferated as both Base and Solana became the dominant venues for high-velocity token creation and meme-coin activity over the past two years.
Why the DEX-routing model matters
Routing users through a self-custody wallet rather than Coinbase’s custodial rails is a notable design choice. It keeps newly launched, often highly volatile tokens off Coinbase’s own balance sheet and listing-review process, while still letting the exchange capture the user’s attention, screen time and potentially transaction flow at the point of discovery.
For traders, the practical implication is that access depends on jurisdiction and wallet setup rather than a simple in-app toggle. The geo-restriction flagged on Coinbase’s product page suggests regulatory considerations are shaping availability, consistent with how exchanges have historically gated DEX and on-chain trading features more cautiously than standard spot listings.
Positioning against Base and Solana flow
The move deepens Coinbase’s ties to both networks it helped popularize with retail audiences: Base, the Coinbase-incubated Ethereum layer-2, and Solana, which has become a primary venue for rapid token issuance and speculative trading volume. Embedding a launches feed for both chains inside the flagship app gives Coinbase a direct channel into that flow, rather than ceding it entirely to third-party launchpads and DEX front-ends.
For on-chain researchers, the feature is worth watching for its downstream effects on wallet activity and DEX volume tied to Coinbase-originated traffic on Base and Solana, particularly around newly deployed tokens where early liquidity and holder concentration tend to be thinnest. As with any self-custody-gated feature, actual usage will hinge on how many users are willing to connect an external wallet rather than trade through Coinbase’s custodial interface.
