Radar Chat Ties BTC Transfers to Signal-Protocol Messaging — Lightning Capacity Is the Metric to Watch

Radar Chat launched Tuesday on iOS and Android, bundling end-to-end encrypted messaging with self-custodial Bitcoin transfers settled over the Lightning Network. Users can send BTC directly inside a chat thread without exporting a wallet address or leaving the app. The launch landed with BTC trading near $64,020.
Custody stays with the user, settlement runs through Lightning channels
The product’s core claim is structural: private keys remain with the user throughout the send flow, and settlement is handled by Lightning Network channels rather than an internal custodial ledger. That separates Radar from messaging-payment integrations that route transfers through a centralized in-app balance, and it shifts liquidity routing onto Lightning’s public channel network instead of a proprietary book.
Radar’s messaging layer is built on the Signal Protocol, the open-source encryption standard, though the app was developed independently and carries no affiliation with Signal itself. The behind-the-scenes design deliberately avoids base-layer Bitcoin settlement, which would be too slow and too costly for chat-native, small-value transfers.
Built by Cake Wallet’s founder, run as a separate entity
Radar comes from Vikrant Sharma, founder of Cake Wallet, though the company has clarified that Radar operates independently of Cake Wallet as a separate entity. Sharma framed the product’s logic to Decrypt: “The idea behind Radar is that the people we talk to and the people we pay are often the same people, yet messaging and payments still live in separate places.”
The positioning places Radar within the self-custodial wallet category rather than alongside custodial fintech apps that have layered crypto rails onto centralized ledgers — the same category Sharma’s Cake Wallet already occupies. It enters a segment that has repeatedly tried to merge messaging and payments, from custodial in-app wallets to bot-driven tipping systems bolted onto existing chat platforms.
The on-chain question: incremental flow or reshuffled transfers
No user counts, committed channel capacity, or transaction volume since Tuesday’s launch have been disclosed, leaving actual adoption as an open data point. Because Radar’s architecture depends on Lightning rather than an internal ledger, any real uptake should surface in aggregate Lightning Network channel and capacity statistics rather than app-store rankings.
The variable worth isolating is whether Radar generates incremental Lightning channel activity or simply repackages existing wallet-to-wallet transfers inside a chat UI. Lightning’s public capacity has long served as a proxy for retail Bitcoin payment adoption, making post-launch capacity data the benchmark against which Radar’s claims should be tested before treating it as more than a UX layer on top of existing rails.
