Israel’s State Attorney’s Office has filed a 16-count indictment against Eli Lavon, a 21-year-old US citizen, alleging he served as an asset for Iranian intelligence and was paid in cryptocurrency. The charge sheet splits into two counts of contact with a foreign agent and 14 counts of communicating information capable of benefiting an enemy state.
Notably absent from the filing: any specifics on the crypto rail itself. No asset type, no wallet addresses, no transfer size, no dollar-equivalent figure — despite cryptocurrency being cited as the core compensation mechanism underpinning the state’s case. For a terminal built on tracing flows, that’s the data gap worth flagging first.
What the indictment claims
Lavon was reportedly studying at an ultra-Orthodox seminary in Jerusalem during the period covered by the charges. Prosecutors say the recruitment traces to November 2025, while he was visiting relatives in the US, allegedly initiated through Telegram.
Per the charge sheet, he went on to film sensitive sites and plant hidden objects containing coded messages intended for handlers.
