Aave V4’s $250M Deposits Mask Net-Outflow Gap as TVL Sits at 7.4M ETH
Aave V4 tops $250M in deposits, but withdrawal pressure and migrated V3 capital cloud the true net-new liquidity picture.

Aave’s V4 deposits have crossed $250 million, but the headline figure obscures a more fragmented liquidity picture underneath. A meaningful share of that inflow reflects users migrating positions out of V3 rather than fresh capital entering the protocol, and network-wide TVL remains roughly 45% below its prior all-time high, according to AMBCrypto.
Aave’s TVL peaked at approximately 13.4 million ETH before a broader market downturn dragged it down sharply. It has since recovered to about 7.4 million ETH, per data cited from DeFiLlama — a rebound that signals improving sentiment but still leaves a substantial capital gap versus the prior cycle high.
Migration versus net-new capital
The core question for traders tracking Aave’s structural health is whether V4’s deposit growth represents genuine expansion of the protocol’s liquidity base or simply a reshuffling of existing V3 balances. AMBCrypto notes that some portion of V4 inflows did come from users rolling over prior V3 positions, meaning the $250 million figure overstates true incremental liquidity.
That said, the report points to positive signs of new capital arriving on top of the migrated assets. For V4 to consolidate its position as DeFi’s dominant liquidity venue, it needs net additions of liquidity to consistently outpace V3’s historical run-rate — not just recycled balances shifting from one version of the protocol to another.
Withdrawals still capping net growth
Even as V4 posts record deposit numbers, withdrawals across the broader Aave ecosystem continue to offset a portion of new inflows, limiting the pace at which aggregate liquidity can expand. AMBCrypto characterizes this as a resilient — but not yet structurally dominant — position, with continuous protocol upgrades supporting recovery without fully closing the gap to prior TVL peaks.
The dynamic mirrors a broader theme in DeFi lending markets this year: deposit headlines can diverge meaningfully from net liquidity trends once migration flows and withdrawal pressure are stripped out. For on-chain researchers, the distinction matters because it separates genuine market-share gains from internal capital reshuffling.
cbETH demand accelerates
One clearer signal of new demand comes from liquid staking collateral. cbETH deposits across Aave held in the $18-$20 million range through May before jumping to roughly $70 million by early July, according to data cited from TokenLogic.
That roughly threefold increase in a matter of weeks suggests strengthening appetite for liquid staking tokens as collateral, which in turn reinforces Aave’s overall lending capacity independent of the V3-to-V4 migration debate. Whether the protocol can translate this into sustained ecosystem-wide expansion will depend on whether net positive flows — excluding internal transfers — continue through the rest of the quarter.
